Anne Hathaway Just Revealed Why She Hates Her Own Name (And What We Should Be Calling Her!)

We all know her as the incredibly talented, elegant, and iconic Anne Hathaway.

But it turns out, the entire world has been calling her by the wrong name her entire career!

During a revealing interview on The Tonight Show, the superstar confessed that she actually really dislikes being called “Anne.” In fact, almost nobody in her real life ever uses that name.

”Call me Annie, everybody, everybody, call me Annie, please,” she begged the audience, making it clear that her famous moniker doesn’t feel natural at all.

How Did She Get Stuck With It?

So, how does a massive Hollywood star end up stuck with a name she doesn’t even like?

It all goes back to when she was just 14 years old. When applying for her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card, the union asked what her professional name should be. Being a young teenager, she just gave them her legal legal birth name.

”It never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, people will call me Anne,” she joked.

The Hilarious Panic

There is actually a hilarious and completely relatable reason the name makes her so uncomfortable today.

The only person in the entire world who actually calls her “Anne” is her mother—and she only uses it when she is absolutely furious!

Because of this childhood conditioning, every time a fan shouts “Anne!” on the red carpet or in public, her heart completely drops. Her immediate, instinctual reaction is to panic and think, “What did I do wrong?!”

”It doesn’t fit,” she explained simply. “I’m an Annie.”

She Isn’t the Only One!

Interestingly enough, “Annie” isn’t the only massive Hollywood A-lister dealing with a permanent name mix-up.

Did you know that Emma Stone’s real birth name is actually Emily?

When she was first starting out in Hollywood, another actress was already registered under the name “Emily Stone.” Because of strict union rules preventing duplicate names, she was forced to pick something completely new.

But her choice of “Emma” wasn’t just a random guess!

Stone confessed that growing up, she was completely obsessed with Baby Spice (Emma Bunton) from the iconic Spice Girls.

In fact, back in the second grade, she actually marched up to her teacher and demanded to be called Emma just so she could be more like her favorite pop idol!

So, the next time you are watching The Devil Wears Prada or La La Land, just remember: you are actually watching Annie and Emily!
