Elon Musk announced that the latest vehicle from Tesla ‘can basically fly like a rocket’.

While Elon Musk previously hinted at the new Roadster’s flying capabilities, it boasts several other extraordinary features that have captivated automotive enthusiasts.

Originally teased in 2017, the production of the second-generation Roadster was expected to start in 2020. However, various factors, including the global pandemic, delayed the launch, and Tesla kept its plans largely under wraps.

In a recent livestream, Tesla revealed the newest iteration of the Roadster, developed through a closer collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, both under Musk’s ownership.

The standout feature of this cutting-edge vehicle is its ability to fly. During an event in Waco, Texas, the Roadster was showcased performing stunts, including driving upside down and accelerating to an impressive 60 mph in less than a second.

“It can basically fly like a rocket,” Musk stated. “And it could do rolls. It could do, like, crazy gymnastics. Whatever you want, really. Now, I should say that this is not necessarily a safety-optimized car. But it takes the fun meter to 11 out of 10.”

While the flying feature steals the spotlight, the new Roadster also includes a rechargeable tank. During the event, it was claimed that the car achieved 0 to 60 mph in just 0.81 seconds, even while upside down.

Prospective buyers should note that the second edition of the Roadster will not be road-legal, which may disappoint some early enthusiasts. The recently showcased Roadster Rocket also falls into this category, while the Roadster Performance remains street-legal.

This two-seater vehicle incorporates active aerodynamics and features a ‘multi-mode suction system for enhanced performance on and off the track’, according to TechCrunch. Additionally, a third variant known as the Thrust is described as ‘race ready’ and includes rear-mounted thrusters, contributing to its extraordinary acceleration.

As for pricing, Musk and Tesla have yet to announce a figure, but given the vehicle’s impressive features, a substantial price tag is expected. The Roadster is projected to enter production in 2028.
