What is the “Normal” Amount of Time to Last in Bed? Health Experts Finally Have the Answer

We have all seen the movies where romantic scenes seem to last for hours on end. But behind closed doors, real-life intimacy is usually a lot quicker and much less dramatic!

While brief sessions can still be incredibly meaningful, there is no denying the infamous “climax gap.” Studies show that men reach the finish line about 95% of the time, while women only hit that mark around 65% of the time.

This gap can leave a lot of men feeling frustrated when they finish a little sooner than they originally planned.

So, how long are men actually supposed to last?

According to a massive new study by Lovehoney, a man’s bedroom stamina shifts dramatically from one decade to the next! Here is exactly how the numbers break down based on age.

Ages 18 to 24: The 16-Minute Mark

According to the data, the youngest guys in the study averaged about 16.14 minutes per session.

Sexual health expert Sarah Mulindwa explains that in your 20s, everything is exciting and novel, which can sometimes lead to a quicker finish. However, young men also have incredibly fast recovery times!

To stretch things out, experts suggest focusing on pacing, strategic breathwork, or even incorporating condoms to help build better control.

Ages 25 to 34: The Absolute Peak

If you are wondering when men hit their stamina prime, this is the golden decade!

Men in this age bracket actually saw their times increase, lasting an average of 18.29 minutes. A solid 15% of men in this group reported keeping the magic going for up to half an hour!

”Experience, rhythm, and better communication usually make things feel smoother during these years,” Sarah explained. This is the perfect age to start intentionally planning intimate time and introducing fun new toys into the mix.

Mid-30s to Mid-40s: A Slight Dip

As men enter their late 30s and 40s, the average time takes a very slight dip to about 17.4 minutes.

Experts say this small decrease is completely normal. It is usually caused by the heavy stress of daily life, changing hormones, or early signs of stamina challenges.

Ages 45 to 54: The 14-Minute Shift

A much more noticeable shift happens as men approach their 50s, with average sessions dropping to 14.15 minutes.

During this decade, physical responses can become a little less predictable. Experts highly recommend choosing more relaxed positions that require less physical effort and focusing heavily on mutual pleasure rather than a ticking clock!

Ages 55 to 64: The 11-Minute Mark

For men in their late 50s and early 60s, the average session wraps up right around the 11.3-minute mark.

During this stage of life, slower arousal and longer recovery times are standard. Everyday health changes and certain medications can also play a major role in the overall pace of the evening.

Age 65 and Older: The 8-Minute Average

The shortest average times in the entire study belonged to men aged 65 and older, coming in at about 8.15 minutes.

More than a quarter of the men in this group reported lasting between three and five minutes. However, a legendary 1% of seniors claimed they could still keep things going for more than an hour!

The Ultimate Sweet Spot

While the numbers bounce around from decade to decade, the study actually highlighted one incredibly clear, universal pattern.

Regardless of age, the vast majority of men tend to fall into an average “sweet spot” of 10 to 15 minutes. Anything much longer than that is actually quite rare!

At the end of the day, experts want you to remember one golden rule: great intimacy is about strong communication, amazing technique, and mutual pleasure—not the numbers on a stopwatch!
