Extreme Measures for Role Preparation

In the world of acting, some performers go to great lengths to authentically embody their characters, and Shia LaBeouf is no exception. Despite enduring challenging conditions on previous sets like Even Stevens and Holes, LaBeouf’s recent choices have raised eyebrows.

Currently, LaBeouf is navigating a difficult personal period, having separated from his wife of a decade, Mia Goth, and facing legal troubles stemming from an alcohol-related incident in New Orleans earlier this year.

In preparation for one of his 2013 films, the 40-year-old actor opted to take LSD to delve deeper into his character’s mindset. However, this method didn’t translate into critical success, as the film is rated a mere 25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

During the filming of the action romance Charlie Countryman, LaBeouf’s unconventional approach included taking acid in front of co-star Rupert Grint, who was unaccustomed to such behavior from his peers, especially given his experience on the Harry Potter series.

Grint recounted his experience to The Guardian in 2014, stating, “He smashed the place up, got naked and kept seeing this owl. If anything will make you not do drugs, it’s watching that.”

LaBeouf later reflected on this episode, admitting it was a poor decision, particularly when it culminated in him choking director Frederik Bond. He shared with Interview Magazine that his erratic behavior escalated quickly, stating, “Right after that acid trip, I was choking him—my trainer had to pull me off him. He almost walked off that movie.” He acknowledged the chaos resulted from his inability to manage his commitment to the role, saying, “I wasn’t evolved enough as a human being to be able to control my commitment.”

LaBeouf emphasized the risks actors face in their pursuit of authenticity, noting that such extreme dedication can lead to serious consequences. He remarked, “They put people in a f****** home for doing what we do for a living. You have to abandon yourself to delusion.” He stressed the importance of having support, saying, “You need a lion tamer who you respect.” While other actors like Christian Bale and Tom Cruise have undergone significant transformations for their roles, the notion of taking drugs on set is likely to be deemed unacceptable by intimacy coordinators today.
