The actor’s father passed away just as he had long anticipated, but the events that unfolded outside their home made the tale even more memorable.
The loss of a parent can distinctly mark life into a before and after. Even years down the line, individuals often recall the phone call, their location at the time, and the exact phrases that indicated everything had shifted.
Matthew McConaughey has candidly discussed his experience of that moment when his father, James McConaughey, passed away. The tragedy took him by surprise since he had always perceived his father as a formidable figure who seemed invincible.
However, the situation also became one of the most extraordinary anecdotes in the actor’s family lore. It involved a prediction that James had asserted repeatedly over the years, a heart attack occurring during intimacy, and a choice made by Kay McConaughey that left the neighbors with an unforgettable sight.
For the Oscar-winning actor, his father’s passing is steeped in both sorrow and an odd sense of humor. McConaughey has recounted the event without concealing the shock, yet he narrates it in a manner that reflects the vibrant personalities of both his parents.
He first disclosed much of this account in his 2020 memoir, Greenlights. The star of Dallas Buyers Club characterized Kay and James McConaughey’s relationship as “like the Pacific Ocean in a storm.”
Their marriage was anything but tranquil or straightforward. They divorced twice and remarried three times, yet McConaughey asserts their bond continuously drew them back together. Despite any disputes or separations, a lack of passion was never an issue.
Kay and James initially tied the knot in 1968 after crossing paths in college. Their relationship endured for 24 years, a duration that encompassed two divorces and three weddings to one another rather than a single, uninterrupted union.
They raised three sons, including Matthew, within a household where affection and conflict were both palpable. McConaughey has noted that his parents occasionally communicated in ways that were loud and intense, yet he never questioned the underlying bond they shared.
A report from People regarding the family narrative indicates that James passed away in 1992. Matthew later described the experience of losing him as a significant turning point that compelled him to take more accountability for his decisions and the lessons imparted by his father.
James had discussed his own demise long before it occurred. He seemed convinced that when his life reached its end, it would happen during a moment of intimacy with his wife rather than as a result of illness, an accident, or simply aging.
This prediction coincided with the confident persona he had cultivated within the family. James was affectionately known as “Big Jim,” a name that embodied both his stature and the larger-than-life impression his loved ones held of him.
McConaughey and his brothers had heard this assertion from their father multiple times. It sounded like yet another audacious claim from a man who believed he knew precisely how he wished to exit the world.

Matthew recalled that his father would tell his sons: “Boys, when I go, I’m gonna be makin’ love to your mother.” Defying all odds, James’ prediction came to fruition.
“I received a call from my mom: ‘Your dad died,’” McConaughey recounted while relaying the moment he learned the news. “My knees buckled. I couldn’t believe it. He was my dad. Nothing could take him down.”
He then disclosed the detail that made his father’s earlier claim seem almost unbelievable: “Except mom. He had a heart attack when he climaxed.”
Sexual activity leads to a temporary increase in heart rate and blood pressure, similar to other forms of physical exertion. This can impose extra strain on the heart, yet a fatal incident during intimacy remains rare and typically involves pre-existing heart conditions or other risk factors.
The American Heart Association notes that heart attacks and angina seldom occur during sexual activity since such activities are usually brief. Individuals whose heart conditions are stable can generally engage in sexual activities safely, though those with severe symptoms or unstable angina should consult a healthcare provider first.
McConaughey has stated that his father experienced a heart attack at climax, although he has not indicated that sex itself was the sole medical trigger. The family narrative centers on the peculiar manner in which James’ repeated prediction materialized and how Kay responded in the moments that followed.
While the memoir already presented readers with a startling depiction of James’ final moments, McConaughey later unveiled another facet of the story during a conversation with comedian Marc Maron on the WTF podcast.
This aspect pertained to what transpired after emergency services arrived at the family residence. Paramedics needed to transport James’ body and adhered to the standard procedure of attempting to cover him with a sheet.
Kay, however, had a different perspective. While still grappling with the loss of her husband, she insisted that he should remain exposed just as he was instead of being concealed before the onlooking neighbors.

“She wouldn’t allow the paramedics to cover him,” McConaughey recalled, chuckling at the memory. “She kept yanking the sheet off saying, ‘Uh-uh, I want the world to see why his nickname was Big Jim. Don’t cover him!’”
Kay was not ready to let the nickname remain a private family matter. As neighbors gathered outside to see the reason for the ambulance’s arrival, she wanted them to understand why her husband had carried that nickname for so many years.
“I found out later that when the ambulance arrived to take him from the house, of course all the neighbors came outside onto the street,” McConaughey elaborated. “And they later told me that my mom, in her negligee nightie that she had woken up in, wouldn’t let the paramedics cover him.”
The neighbors who emerged that morning received a rather direct introduction to “Big Jim.” What began as concern over an emergency transformed into a scene that became a part of the McConaughey family legacy.
On a personal note, I can only wish that my own wife would choose an entirely different reaction if I were to meet the same end. Certain expressions of love are better left away from public view.
Kay later recounted the incident herself during a 2020 appearance on Red Table Talk. She remembered, “My husband died making love to me. I recall saying, ‘What’s the matter, big boy? Did I wear you out?’” When James failed to respond to her playful inquiry, she realized that something had gone wrong.
Kay described what happened next: “His heart just stopped, you know? We had a party for him, kind of a celebration of his life.”
The family’s response was not to diminish James’ character in the narrative or reduce him to the manner of his death. They organized a gathering that honored the dynamic, passionate man they had known throughout his life.
This may explain why McConaughey can recount the story with both sorrow and laughter intertwined. His father’s death was a significant loss, but the peculiar final scene also encapsulated the fierce love, candid humor, and absence of embarrassment that had always characterized his parents’ bond.
