The 1980s film features a princess with a disturbing collection of heads and a doctor attempting electroconvulsive therapy.

Decades after the release of *The Wizard of Oz*, an unofficial sequel by Walt Disney emerged, quickly gaining a reputation for its eerie content. *Return to Oz* is a dark fantasy that chronicles Dorothy’s return to the Land of Oz, only to find it in ruins under the rule of a tyrannical king.

This children’s film has been categorized as ‘horror’ and is often described as ‘one of the darkest children’s films ever made.’ It includes unsettling scenes set in a psychiatric ward and features a headless princess with a collection of children’s heads.

Despite its $28 million budget, the film did not perform well at the box office initially but later developed a cult following, known for instilling fear in young viewers as Dorothy Gale encounters Princess Mombi’s chamber filled with severed heads.

It also introduces the Wheelers, a group of sinister creatures with wheels for feet, along with scenes depicting a young Dorothy’s memories of Oz being erased by a menacing doctor. Released in 1985, the film premiered in the United States to mixed reviews. Critics Siskel and Ebert labeled it ‘trashy,’ warning that it could frighten children.

The Guardian noted that the film lives on in the nightmares of those in their forties but praised its ambition and the impressive central performance.

Conversely, Walter Murch, an American film editor and director, expressed disagreement with the notion that the film was overly frightening for children. He remarked, “People said this is too scary for kids. I thought, well, kids are looking at films with heads being chopped off and blood gushing everywhere, and nothing like that happens in this film. No one even touches anyone else to hurt them.”

Although Murch’s perspective holds some validity, many viewers found the film to be unsettling. One notable scene involves young Dorothy, portrayed by Fairuza Balk, sneaking into Mombi’s collection of severed heads to obtain the Powder of Life. The heads awaken, scream her name, and are subsequently pursued by Mombi’s headless body.

Other scenes showcase the bizarre Wheelers, who possess wheels instead of hands and feet, along with peculiar faces on their helmets. In discussions on Reddit, viewers shared how traumatizing these characters were, describing them as ‘creepy.’

Additionally, before returning to Oz, Dorothy finds herself in a psychiatric institution due to her insistence that Oz is real. There, a doctor plans to erase her memories using electroconvulsive therapy.

After discovering that the once-celebrated land, complete with the Yellow Brick Road and Emerald City, has been destroyed, Dorothy, alongside her new friends like Tik-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Gump, must confront the evil rulers and restore Oz.

Disney describes the Wheelers as ‘creepy’ and Princess Mombi as ‘head-hunting,’ but the official classification lists the film under adventure, family, and fantasy genres.

However, a BBC article labeled it one of the ‘darkest children’s films ever made.’ In a Reddit discussion about the movie, one user stated, “I still find it absolutely terrifying, and I’m 29. Anyone find this film a scary ride?” Another added, “Even the good guys are kind of creepy in their ways,” referencing Jack’s unsettling inquiry to Dorothy about the state of his head.

Yet another commenter noted, “The movie begins with Dorothy being committed to an asylum and then set up for electro-shock treatment, and that’s all before all the stuff in Oz happens.”

Despite its chilling content, *Return to Oz* has developed a loyal fanbase over the years, achieving a 71 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 50,000 ratings. The film was also included in a retrospective program celebrating Walter Murch‘s career at the American Cinematheque.
