I was thrown out with $100 and silence from my parents for five years—until a random online search by my sister revealed the truth

88 missed calls! Who could possibly call someone that many times? It turns out my estranged mother is the one.

Before I received those calls, I hadn’t spoken to either her or my father for five years, and then suddenly, they began texting me messages like, “Emma, sweetheart, please answer,” alongside sentiments about how family is supposed to be the utmost priority.

I found those texts both desperate and comical, even breaking into laughter. My coworker Nadia glanced over at me from across the table, clearly wondering if I was losing my mind.

Now, if you’re curious about why I severed ties with my parents all those years ago, it was because my father compelled me to abandon my software engineering scholarship when I was just nineteen, as he needed someone to work unpaid at his logistics business. This was unacceptable to me from the very beginning, because that scholarship was my ticket to achieving my lifelong career aspirations. However, he’s one of those individuals who won’t take no for an answer, so he didn’t hesitate to throw a $100 bill at me along with two garbage bags, ordering me to leave.

My mother did nothing to stop him from kicking me out, while my sister Chloe stood on the stairs, tearfully watching the whole scene unfold.

They even went to the extent of changing the locks.

That hundred dollars lasted me roughly six days, and just like that, I found myself without a home and in dire straits. I remember sitting in a nearby café during a heavy downpour, hoping desperately that my laptop wouldn’t get damaged. I knew I had to find a way out of this situation, or I’d be homeless for good.

Initially, I ended up sleeping in university computer labs, using the gym’s showers, and surviving on whatever inexpensive food I could manage to buy. Even after I managed to secure an internship and graduated, when I attempted to reconnect with them, they either ignored my outreach or responded with messages that I was being unreasonable. Eventually, I stopped trying.

However, five years later, things were looking bright. I established a software and security company called Aegis Ledger, and on that very day, a major business publication featured an article about me following a significant acquisition deal we had just completed.

Chloe must have seen it. Amid my mother’s missed calls, I received a voicemail from her. She was sobbing so hard that I could barely make out her words.

It turned out they had told her I didn’t want to return home because I despised them. At the time of my departure, Chloe was too young to grasp the situation and was easily influenced by my dad. In her message, she also mentioned that my father was panicking because I had never informed them that I was now a business owner.

When I relayed the situation to Nadia, she immediately understood why my father was so upset. It turned out that his business was on our company’s acquisition list because our software had detected a massive financial fraud scheme. They had been obtaining loans against fictitious invoices for years. When I asked Nadia about the severity of the situation, she simply looked at me and said, “Criminally severe.”

Then another notification appeared on my phone, a text proclaiming how they had “always believed in me.” I flipped the phone face down, disregarded it, and instructed Nadia to arrange a meeting with them for the following day. If they genuinely wanted to converse, they could come to my office.

As expected, they showed up, behaving as if they were entering a family portrait session. Mom even brought a lemon cake. Meanwhile, Chloe appeared as if she wished the floor would open up and swallow her. The moment my father stepped into my office, he headed straight to the window, gazed out at the city, glanced at my nameplate, and acted as if we had merely seen each other last week.

She set the cake box right on my desk, pausing to express concern over how thin I looked, as if five whole years hadn’t zipped by in an instant. The second my father sat down without even asking, he jumped directly into business. Apparently, they were experiencing a “temporary” cash flow problem, and since my company was in the midst of acquiring their lender, it should be incredibly simple for me to resolve their compliance issues to elevate their credit limit.

I attempted to clarify that what he was asking would require bypassing an active fraud investigation, but he was entirely unfazed. He even suggested that I refrain from using such “harsh language” for what he considered straightforward business dealings.

I picked up the folder, opened it right in front of him, and laid out the evidence: invoices for shipments that never occurred, double-billed receivables, and a vendor account established using my own Social Security number right after they expelled me from home five years prior.

Chloe looked at him in sheer horror and asked if he had truly gone so far as to use my name. My mother merely shrugged, stating that our names were included on those documents to keep us linked to them because we supposedly owed them something. My father attempted to smooth things over by proposing a “fake family reunion” if I refinanced his debts, threatening that he would ruin my reputation if I declined. While my mother began fake-crying and Nadia quietly recorded the entire exchange, I maintained a calm demeanor and simply played along to see what else he would demand.

That was when he threw out the figure: ten million.

Instead of arguing, I rose to my feet, tapped the wall screen, and pulled up our live database. I displayed every single one of my father’s emails where he had misused my Social Security number, in addition to records of my mother channeling money into shell companies and their documentation proving they intended to lay off every single employee. Chloe was so shocked she literally fell out of her chair. My father lost it, screaming and lunging across the desk, but the instant he got close, security entered the room.

The remainder of the day was a complete whirlwind of investigators, bankers, and handcuffs. My father ended up serving actual federal prison time, my mother lost every single cent she had, and we completely restructured the business to safeguard all the employees.

Chloe managed to secure an entry-level compliance position based on her own efforts, without any handouts or shortcuts, and we have slowly begun to rediscover how to be sisters once again.
